For Indonesia's visa on arrival, electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA) and visa-free visits, the published requirements include a return ticket or a ticket onward to another country. The Central Jakarta Immigration Office FAQ states this for the categories it describes. Check the category that applies to your passport; a different visa or residence permit can have different conditions.

Which ticket should you carry?
A return ticket goes from Indonesia toward your home country. An onward ticket takes you from Indonesia to another country you can enter. A domestic Bali–Jakarta flight does not prove that you will leave Indonesia. The exit route should be realistic and dated within the stay you currently hold.

The immigration visa information gives category details. Visa validity is not always the same as the duration you may stay after entry. An extension you hope to obtain later does not change the permission you hold today.
What should the ticket show?
- the passenger name matching your passport
- travel from Indonesia to another country, not only between Indonesian airports
- a departure date within the currently permitted stay
- a confirmed or issued ticket status that meets the applicable rule
- an itinerary you can read at check-in and at the border
A booking reference can help identify an itinerary, but a PNR alone does not prove that a ticket has been issued. Ask the operating airline what document it requires for your route. Keep the document available offline, and check that the next country will admit you.
Is a temporary reservation sufficient?
A temporary flight reservation can show a proposed route while it is active. It is not automatically an issued or paid ticket. Where your entry category calls for a return or onward ticket, do not assume that an unissued reservation satisfies the rule. If the airline or relevant authority expressly accepts a reservation for your particular case, confirm that it remains active when you present it.
A genuine ticket with change or refund conditions that suit your plans may be an option when your route is still flexible. Compare the actual terms before purchase. You can review reservation options, but do not describe a temporary booking as a confirmed ticket.
Planning an extension?
If your visa category permits an extension, it may require a separate application after arrival and approval is not automatic. Base your initial exit date on the stay you have now. - Read the permitted stay for your specific entry category.
- Choose an exit route to another country within that stay.
- Check the ticket status, passenger name and date with the operating airline.
- Save the document offline for departure and arrival checks.

Frequently asked questions
Is this an official requirement or just an airline check?
The Indonesian immigration FAQ lists a return or onward ticket for visa on arrival and visa-free visits. The airline may check the same document before it lets you board.
Can I leave from Jakarta after landing in Bali?
Yes, if your complete itinerary takes you out of Indonesia within the stay you are allowed. The Bali–Jakarta leg alone is domestic and does not show international departure.
Will an Indonesian hotel booking count?
No. Accommodation documents show where you intend to stay, not a journey out of Indonesia.
Does a 60-day visa have the same rule?
Do not apply the visa-on-arrival rule automatically to another visa category. Check the conditions printed on your visa and the official guidance for that category. Any exit date should fit the stay actually granted.
