Indonesia’s immigration guidance for visa on arrival lists a return ticket or a ticket onward to another country among the requirements. It also lists an onward or return ticket for an electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA) and visa-free visits. Check the conditions for your nationality and visa category before traveling to Jakarta, Bali or another Indonesian entry point. A ticket from Indonesia to another country may meet an onward-travel rule; a domestic flight within Indonesia does not show that you will leave.
The airline may inspect your documents before boarding, while Indonesian immigration decides whether to admit you on arrival. A one-way flight into Indonesia does not remove the exit-ticket requirement for an entry category that has one. Which journeys need an exit ticket?
The published requirements for visa on arrival, e-VOA and visa-free visits mention a return or onward ticket. Check your particular permission before assuming that a later extension will cover a planned exit date. Visa validity and permitted length of stay are different; use the stay shown on your visa or entry permission when choosing a departure date.
If you enter through Bali and plan to continue to Singapore, Malaysia or Australia, confirm the next country’s entry rules too. A flight from Bali to Jakarta remains within Indonesia. The immigration service’s visa information gives category details that can change, so review it close to departure.
What should your document show?
- the passenger name exactly as it appears in your passport
- travel from Indonesia to another country, not an Indonesian domestic leg
- an exit date that fits the stay actually permitted
- a ticket status that meets the published requirement for your entry category
- a legible itinerary available at check-in and at the border
If you plan to leave by ferry or another route, check that the ticket and border crossing meet your category’s rules, and ask the operating airline what it accepts before you travel.
Can a temporary reservation replace a ticket?
A temporary flight reservation can describe a proposed journey while active, but it is not automatically an issued ticket. A PNR alone does not prove that a ticket has been paid for or issued. Where immigration guidance calls for a return or onward ticket, obtain a document that actually meets that requirement. Do not present an unissued reservation as a confirmed ticket.
If your itinerary is still flexible, compare the document types before you review booking options. A reservation used in a visa application may be checked differently from an exit ticket required for boarding or entry.

- Check its current onward- or return-ticket requirement and permitted stay.
- Confirm that your exit route reaches another country you can enter.
- Check your name, date and ticket status with the operating airline.
- Keep your documents readable and available offline.
Final check
Indonesia publishes a return- or onward-ticket requirement for common tourist entry categories, including visa on arrival and visa-free visits. Match the document to your actual visa, route and permitted stay. An internal Indonesian flight or an unissued booking should not be described as proof of an issued exit ticket.
