A return ticket takes you back to your starting point. An onward ticket takes you from the country you are visiting to another country. For example, after London → Bali, Bali → London is a return journey; Bali → Singapore is onward travel.
That describes the route, not whether the document is paid, issued or accepted. A temporary reservation can show either route, but it is not the same as a paid flight ticket. Before buying anything, check what your destination and airline require for your passport, visa and itinerary.

Three route examples
A fixed holiday: you fly London → Bali and plan to return to London two weeks later. The Bali → London flight is both your return journey and your planned exit from Indonesia.
A multi-country trip: you fly London → Bali, then Bali → Singapore. The second flight is onward travel, not a return to London. Check your eligibility to enter Singapore as well as the rules for entering Indonesia.
More travel inside one country: you fly London → Bali, then Bali → Jakarta. The second flight remains inside Indonesia. You still need to consider how and when you will leave Indonesia.
These examples explain direction. They do not establish that a particular ticket or reservation will be accepted for every traveler.
What official requirements actually say
Requirements vary by country and visa category. Do not replace the wording on your own checklist with a general rule from a travel blog.
Indonesia: return or continuation to another country
The Indonesian Immigration FAQ lists a return ticket or a ticket continuing to another country among the e-VOA requirements. Its VOA section includes the same requirement, with an exception for specified crew joining a vessel. This is not a statement that every temporary hold is accepted. New Zealand: read your visa conditions
Immigration New Zealand's Visitor Visa guidance describes a ticket to leave or evidence of funds to purchase one, unless the visa waives that requirement. Netherlands Schengen application: reservation versus paid ticket
The Dutch tourism visa checklist asks for a reservation in the applicant's name covering travel into and out of the Schengen area, or another document showing travel plans. It explicitly says a paid travel ticket is not necessary for that application. That does not turn an unpaid reservation into a ticket you can board with. Temporary reservation, PNR and paid ticket: three different things
The itinerary describes the passenger, airports and dates. A PDF records those details, but a saved copy cannot tell you whether the reservation is still active.
The PNR or booking reference identifies a reservation record. An airline reference can differ from the agency's order number. Use the airline's booking service or ask the issuing provider to confirm its status. Our PNR verification guide links to official airline lookup pages; it does not perform a live check itself.
An issued ticket is distinct from a temporary hold. If you intend to take the flight, confirm ticket issuance with the airline or seller. Do not assume a visible booking reference is enough.
A hold can expire before the flight date. For example, a reservation for a flight next month may have a much earlier ticketing deadline. The departure date and the reservation's expiry are different dates.
Which option should you choose?
- You know your return plan: compare actual return fares and their change or cancellation conditions. You may not need any extra document.
- You are continuing to another country: book the onward journey that matches your plan and check admission and transit requirements for the next stop.
- You are preparing a visa application: follow the responsible consulate's checklist. If it asks for a reservation rather than a paid ticket, check the reservation's validity against your appointment and review timing.
- Your plans are not ready and departure is close: confirm what the airline requires before purchasing a temporary hold. If an issued ticket is required, a temporary reservation is not a substitute.
Do not choose purely on the lowest advertised document price. Compare what you receive, when it becomes active, when it expires, and what happens if it cannot be created.
