Thailand's entry category determines the onward document you need. Under the tourist visa exemption revised on 15 September 2026, the Thai Embassy in London says eligible visitors can stay up to 30 days and must show onward travel within 30 days of arrival. The embassy says visa-on-arrival applicants instead need fully paid onward tickets within 15 days. Check which scheme applies to your passport before you fly.
The Thai Embassy in Wellington describes confirmed air, train, bus or boat tickets for visitors under the tourist visa exemption. Your airline may review your documents before boarding, and Thai immigration can request them at the port of entry. A booking that was not checked on a previous trip does not change the published rule.
What should the proof show?
- a passenger name that matches your passport
- travel from Thailand to another country, not a domestic flight
- a departure date within the period required for your entry category
- a confirmed or fully paid ticket when the applicable rule calls for one
- a readable record accessible at check-in and arrival
A Bangkok–Phuket flight does not prove that you will leave Thailand. A journey to another country may be by an allowed mode of transport, but check the specific conditions for your category and route. Our Thailand return ticket guide explains the difference between return and onward travel.
Can a temporary reservation replace the ticket?
A temporary flight reservation is not a fully paid or issued ticket. A PNR can help verify a booking, but it does not by itself satisfy a rule requiring a confirmed or fully paid ticket. Ask the airline or visa authority whether your particular document is accepted before relying on it. If your specific application accepts a reservation, check that it remains active; then you can review reservation options.
Before you travel
Check the official rules for your passport, visa and intended border crossing. Match your exit date to the stay currently permitted rather than an extension you hope to obtain later. Keep the required document legible and readily available for both the airline and immigration.
Final check
For the revised 30-day tourist visa exemption, prepare the required onward proof within 30 days. For visa on arrival, follow the fully paid ticket rule and its 15-day window. Other visa categories can have different requirements, so use the checklist for your own entry permission.
Create a temporary flight reservation for visa files, airline checks, or proof of onward travel.
