Flight reservation for Thailand: visa exemption and onward proof
In this article 5 sections

Thailand revised its visa exemption rules effective 15 September 2026. The Royal Thai Embassy in London describes a 30-day tourist exemption for eligible passport holders and proof of onward travel within that period. Eligibility, permitted stay, and ticket requirements can differ under other agreements or visa categories, so check the instructions for your passport before booking.

A temporary flight reservation is not a paid or issued ticket. Some official checklists ask for a confirmed or fully paid travel ticket. Do not assume a reservation satisfies those rules; ask your airline or the authority handling your visa if the wording is unclear. The IATA Travel Centre can help you check travel documents, but the relevant Thai authority sets the entry conditions.

Before a flight to Bangkok

Your airline may check your passport, visa or exemption, and onward travel document before boarding. If you plan to leave Thailand by bus, train, or boat, check whether that proof is accepted for your specific entry route. The Thai Embassy in Wellington describes confirmed air, train, bus, or boat tickets for its visa exemption guidance. A temporary hold may expire before the check.

Applying for a Thai visa

Read the current checklist from the Thai embassy or e-visa system processing your application. Depending on visa type and location, it may ask for an itinerary, booking confirmation, or issued ticket. Our proof of onward travel guide compares the options. Prepare the document it actually requests:

  • use the same passenger name as in your passport and application
  • keep dates consistent with the visit you describe
  • include an exit route from Thailand when required
  • check that any booking remains active when it will be reviewed

If your checklist accepts a reservation, you can review temporary reservation options. If it requires a paid ticket, purchase the ticket that meets that requirement.

Land borders and later entries

Leaving and re-entering Thailand creates a new entry check. The revised exemption also has limits on repeated entries for some passport holders. Check the rules that apply when you return rather than assuming the first entry permission extends to later trips. A reservation for one crossing does not prove a future exit after a second entry.

Common mistakes

  • relying on an old 60-day exemption rule without checking the September 2026 revision
  • showing an exit date beyond the permitted stay for the current entry
  • using a domestic Bangkok–Phuket flight as proof of leaving Thailand
  • treating a temporary reservation as a paid ticket when the checklist requires one

Final word

Check the latest Thai exemption or visa conditions for your passport, then carry the onward document they require. A genuine reservation can help only where reservations are accepted and while it remains active. Make sure the route, name, and dates match your actual travel plans.

Create a temporary flight reservation for visa files, airline checks, or proof of onward travel.
