India return ticket rules: e-Visa and onward travel
In this article 6 sections

Do you need a return ticket for India? If you travel with an Indian e-Visa, the official e-Visa portal says you should have a return ticket or onward journey ticket, as well as sufficient funds for your stay. A return to your departure country is not the only option: a ticket from India to another country can serve as onward travel. The right date and document still depend on the stay your visa actually permits.

The portal’s application process asks travelers to upload a passport page and photograph, plus extra documents for certain categories. It does not state that every e-Tourist applicant must upload a flight reservation. For an e-Transit visa, however, its document list expressly includes confirmed travel tickets to India and onward from India. Separate what you must submit with an application from what you must carry when you travel.

Return ticket or onward ticket?

A return ticket takes you back to a country you visited or departed from. An onward ticket takes you from India to another country. A domestic flight such as Delhi–Mumbai does not show an exit from India. The government’s e-Visa wording allows a return or onward journey ticket; it does not say every traveler must fly back to the same airport. Our India onward travel guide explains what an exit document should show.

What to prepare before departure

  • check your passport’s eligibility and the exact Indian visa category
  • confirm the stay allowed on each entry, rather than using the overall visa validity as an exit deadline
  • carry a return or onward ticket with your name, route and date readable
  • follow any stricter confirmed-ticket requirement for your category, such as e-Transit
  • keep the visa authorization and required travel documents available at check-in and arrival

An airline may review your documents before boarding, and Indian immigration may inspect them on arrival. Neither authority is obliged to accept a document merely because another traveler used one on a previous trip. Confirm your airline’s rules for your route if the status of your ticket is unclear.

Is a temporary reservation enough?

A temporary flight reservation is not necessarily a paid or issued ticket. A PNR may make a booking verifiable, but it does not by itself prove that the ticket required by the official rule exists. Do not assume that a hold used during a visa application will be accepted at check-in. If your particular authority accepts a reservation, make sure it remains active and review reservation options only for that permitted use. When the rule requires a confirmed ticket, obtain one.

If your plans change

Check the stay granted under your current permission before moving an exit date. An extension or a later entry is a separate matter and should not be treated as approved in advance. If you will leave India by a different route, verify that your new document still shows an actual journey to another country within the permitted stay.

Frequently asked questions

Must my ticket return to the country I came from?

No. The e-Visa portal allows a return or onward journey ticket. The onward destination must be outside India, and you should check that you can enter or transit through it.

Does every e-Tourist application require a flight reservation upload?

The general e-Visa application instructions do not state a universal flight-reservation upload for e-Tourist applicants. Read the current document list for your own category. The e-Transit list specifically asks for confirmed travel tickets to India and onward.

Can I use an active PNR instead of a ticket?

A PNR can identify a booking, but it is not proof of payment or ticket issuance. Ask the airline or the visa authority whether your particular document satisfies its requirement before relying on it.

Is a hotel reservation enough to prove departure?

No. Accommodation describes where you intend to stay; the return or onward ticket concerns how you will leave India.

Final check

For an Indian e-Visa, prepare the return or onward ticket described on the official portal. Check your own visa category for any stricter ticket rule, and keep your departure date within the stay actually allowed. A temporary reservation is useful only where the relevant authority expressly accepts it.

Create a temporary flight reservation for visa files, airline checks, or proof of onward travel.
