Flight reservations for visas from India: compare the checklists
In this article 4 sections

If you apply for a visa while living in India, the destination’s checklist determines whether you need a flight reservation. There is no single rule for Schengen, UK and US applications. The German Missions in India warn that missing return-flight reservations can affect a Schengen application. UK visa guidance says not to book travel before a decision. The US visitor-visa guidance likewise says not to make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa. Start with the current instructions for your exact visa, not a generic “VFS-ready” template.

A visa application centre may collect documents, but the visa authority sets the requirements and decides the application. A temporary reservation or PNR is not proof of a paid or issued ticket. Do not buy a document merely because an agent says every visa file needs one.

When a flight reservation is required

For a German Schengen application from India, check the mission’s current checklist for your purpose of travel and place of residence. If it asks for return-flight reservations, show a plausible route into and out of the Schengen area with dates consistent with your form, accommodation and insurance. Our Schengen flight-reservation guide for India covers multi-city itineraries.

For a UK application, follow UKVI’s instruction not to book travel before a decision. For a US B1/B2 application, the State Department warns against buying tickets before a visa is issued. Neither instruction should be converted into a blanket demand for a flight reservation. Other countries and visa categories have their own checklists.

What to check before submitting a document

  • the exact document wording on the current consular checklist
  • your name as printed in your passport
  • entry, exit and connection dates that match the rest of your application
  • whether the authority accepts a reservation or requires an issued ticket
  • whether a permitted reservation remains active when you submit it

A PNR may help verify a booking, but a specific consulate may ask for different evidence. Do not claim that every VFS upload requires an airline-searchable PNR or a single PDF: follow the format and file-size rules shown by your application portal.

Temporary reservation or ticket?

Use a temporary flight reservation only when your checklist accepts one. Make sure the route and dates are real, the document is legible, and the booking has not expired. If the checklist requires a paid or issued ticket, a temporary hold does not replace it. If reservations are permitted and useful for your case, you can review reservation options before submitting your file.

Final check

Identify the country, visa category, consulate and current checklist first. The right flight document for a Schengen file from India may be unnecessary for a UK or US visitor application. Keep the information consistent and describe a reservation honestly as a reservation.

Create a temporary flight reservation for visa files, airline checks, or proof of onward travel.
