A flight to Bangkok is an entry into Thailand, so the document you need depends on your passport and entry category. Under the tourist visa exemption revised on 15 September 2026, the Thai Embassy in London says eligible visitors may stay up to 30 days and must show onward travel within 30 days of arrival. For visa on arrival, it requires fully paid onward tickets within 15 days. Check the rule that applies to you before flying, rather than relying on the rule for another traveler.
An airline may inspect your exit document before boarding for Bangkok. Thai immigration may also request it at the port of entry. The Thai Embassy in Wellington describes confirmed air, train, bus or boat tickets for travelers using the tourist visa exemption. Its published condition does not disappear because nobody checked your booking on an earlier trip.
What should the exit document show?
- a passenger name matching your passport
- travel from Thailand to another country, not a flight within Thailand
- a departure date inside the period required for your entry category
- a confirmed or fully paid ticket when the applicable rule requires one
- a readable document ready for both airline check-in and arrival
A Bangkok–Chiang Mai or Bangkok–Phuket flight is domestic and does not show that you will leave Thailand. A ticket to another country can be a return or onward journey; consult the conditions for your own entry category. Our Thailand onward travel guide explains the nationwide rules in more detail.
Can you use a temporary reservation?
A temporary reservation is not automatically a confirmed, fully paid or issued ticket. A PNR can help verify a booking, but a PNR alone does not satisfy a rule requiring a fully paid ticket. If you are applying for a visa rather than entering under an exemption, check that visa application’s document list separately. Our Bangkok visa reservation guide covers that earlier application step. Only if your particular process accepts a reservation should you review reservation options and check that the booking remains active.
Before boarding for Bangkok
Check the official rule for your passport, visa and intended border crossing. Make sure the planned exit date falls within the stay currently allowed, not a possible future extension. Keep a readable copy of the required ticket available offline and confirm that its name, route and date agree with your other travel documents.
Final check
For the revised 30-day tourist visa exemption, prepare the required onward proof within 30 days of arrival. For visa on arrival, follow the fully paid ticket rule and its 15-day window. Other visas may have different conditions, so use the requirements for your own permission to enter Thailand.
Create a temporary flight reservation for visa files, airline checks, or proof of onward travel.
